Afraid of looking like a geek

Reading The Web’s Youngest Teacher I found this gem:

I had kept the fact that I had a Web site from all my friends at school. I didn’t want them to think I was a geek or anything, so I just didn’t tell anyone.

Funny how “being a geek” was something someone could have shied from in 1999.

Yesterday I was at a meeting and at one point we were talking about how vital it is to have a connection to the internet is nowadays, where I should have said something like “I work on the Web so I need the connection”, I said “obviously I’m a geek so it’s important for me”.

It’s become ambient, in a way. We’re not ashamed of being connected geeks more than someone collecting stamps or making boats in bottles.
